NEC Deutschland GmbH will also implement the next phase of expansion for the CLAIX High Performance Computer at RWTH Aachen University. Following CLAIX-2023 and CLAIX-2025, RWTH is once again relying on NEC’s expertise in the field of High Performance Computing (HPC) and AI. CLAIX-2027 is scheduled to go live in the second quarter of 2027.
NEC Deutschland GmbH is a subsidiary of NEC Europe Ltd. and a leading provider of HPC and AI solutions, with a focus on sustainable performance for practical scientific and technical applications.
With CLAIX-2027, RWTH’s HPC system is being expanded to a new level to meet the growing demand for computing resources in the fields of engineering, the natural sciences, data-intensive research, and AI. The CLAIX system combines resources accessible nationwide as part of the National High Performance Computing (NHR) initiative with Tier-3 resources for researchers in North Rhine-Westphalia. It offers a modern platform for large-scale simulations, AI applications, and data analysis and is seamlessly integrated into the existing 1-cluster concept. With consulting, training, and application support provided by the IT Center, CLAIX-2027 strengthens RWTH’s HPC infrastructure and enables cutting-edge research at the national and international levels.
CLAIX-2027 comprises 53 GPU nodes with a total of 212 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs (GB200) for AI training and inference, as well as an additional x86-based HPC partition with 20 nodes for HPC applications in North Rhine-Westphalia. The system is complemented by interactive nodes and additional services, as well as a high-performance 400 Gbit/s NVIDIA InfiniBand network. A total of 28 petabytes of storage is available, including 3 petabytes for HOME and AI file systems and 25 petabytes for HPCWORK.
